Panama Kayak Adventure
It was easily the most dangerous fishing I had ever done. Large Pacific swells crashed against the rocks. Farther offshore those swells were no big deal – just a gentle rise and fall. Inshore, waves rebounding off the cliffs combined with incoming swells created unpredictable, turbulent seas. The trick was to get my kayak close enough to cast a popper among the rocks while staying far enough away that a rogue wave wouldn’t wash me into the impact zone.
Good Times on the Party Boat!
The captain and crew of the Ocean Obsession out of Sunrise Marina in Port Canaveral have continued to put their customers on some solid fish. Mangrove snapper, lane snapper and triggerfish have been the main species caught but there have been some other surprises such as cobia, dolphin and even a big redfish came in off the reefs. I think that guy may have been lost! It's a great time to book a trip to get out and catch some fish for dinner!
Topwater Bite Picking Up
The fishing has been really good!! Huge fish on live bait, the Jackhammer bite is on fire and the topwater bite is picking up. What more could you ask for? My big fish are coming from grass mats. If you find a grass mat with water under it then there is probably a giant bass under there.
Good Sight Fishing Conditions
Inshore this week was on the agenda with the winds we have been having. Fished the lagoon and had a good time with a bunch of trout, some snook and a few slot reds in the mangroves. There's plenty of mullet and glass minnows after last weeks rains and the water has been clean which makes it good for the sight fishermen.
Small Fry on Headwaters
Headwaters has still got me scratching my head trying to get a big bite on artificial. We worked a new area this past week and we did manage over 20 fish but nothing over the 3 pound size.
Free Resources For Game-Planning Kayak Fishing Trips
So I want to switch gears a bit this week. Instead of detailing a particular place, I want to talk about game planning. One of the challenges of kayak fishing is covering ground, you can’t just zoom across a lake or the lagoon, or several miles up or down a river with the power of an outboard motor. Picking where to fish in my opinion is more important than choosing what or how to fish.
Tarpon Starting to Show Up
The fishing in the lagoon has been on fire this past week with topwater plugs being the best producers followed closely by Z-Man paddle-tails rigged weedless. Tarpon are starting to show up and we should expect their numbers to increase over the next couple weeks.
Bad Surf Conditions
Just went to beach at puneda area to fish. But the weather report from weather channel was WAY OFF! It was consistently about 20mph winds from the north which earlier they said about 7 mph from SE. Huge disappointment! Man it sucks...
Grouper Season Starts May 1st
Grouper Season starts May 1, running through the end of year in Atlantic federal waters. The aggregate bag limit is no more than a total of 3 grouper per person, per day.
Steady Bite In Mosquito Lagoon
The bite continues to be steady throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The bait has been plentiful scattered both in the backwaters and on the flats. Look for the trout, redfish and snook in and around the bait pods.
