Kayak Fishing: Banana River and More
I have been enjoying my first week off of school, and have taken advantage of the opportunity to get out and fish and explore new places/places I haven't been in over a year. I fished a new spot on the Banana River outside of Cocoa Beach, fished an early morning on the Indian River Lagoon and did some Bass fishing with my cousin Mark who is down for our family reunion. So let's dive in!
See Weed Everywhere at the Inlet
Good morning all you fishing fans out there! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! The weather was nice, but the fishing wasn't so good. Again, I have to say this report isn't one I like to do, but when I do my reports I don't sugar coat anything, I tell you all how it really is down there.
Big Bites Lacking at Headwaters
I was able to tag along with my friend again to Headwaters last week. We fished the same areas and some newer areas both days. The big bites are still not happening on artificial lures but we managed several in the 4-5 pound size which is okay by me.
Kitty, Kitty, Kitty…
What a good week to see. Truth be told, we only fished a few days due to the weather again, but each day we fished, it was game on! Captain Tyler placed once again in the FSFA tourney with a 4th place grouper.
Lots to Target Inshore
The inshore bite around Sebastian is still pretty good, but the winds are keeping us off the beach for most of the week. It looks like more of the same weather ahead with north winds and rough seas, so expect beach fishing to remain a challenging until later in the week.
June & July Giants in the Surf
Under the duress of summer's sweltering heat, Space Coast surf fishing definitely isn’t for everyone. It gets HOT, but those willing to tolerate the heat, the beach provides some of the best surf fishing of the year. BIG fish in the way of snook, tarpon and sharks will make for some exhilarating fishing opportunities as we progress into late June, hitting high gear as we enter July, the month especially renowned for GIANTS right on the beach.
A Marlin of a Milestone!
Andrew Berube caught his first ever Blue Marlin fishing the Abaco Canyons area east of Guana Cay. This beautiful fish was estimated to weigh around 300 pounds!
Backwater Bite Holding Strong
The bite is still holding strong throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We have been continuing to bring good numbers of trout and redfish boat side, along with the occasional snook that wants to cooperate.
Lots of Holiday Traffic Now Past
This past Memorial Day Weekend was definitely challenging with the massive influx of people on the water but it did not stop the fish from eating. We did get a little extra water pushed into the New Smyrna Beach backwaters with a strong NE wind for a few days. The winds have shifted back to the West Southwest and water levels are starting to get back to normal.
Dirty Water & Sargassum at Sebastian Inlet
Fishing in the entire inlet, again has been pretty slow due to all the dirty water and massive amounts of sargassum weed throughout. Not sure who wanted to install wall to wall shag carpeting in the inlet, but we need the blue clean liquid tile back!
It’s Tarpon Time on the Space Coast!
Summer is here and the tarpon are starting to show in good numbers across the entire east coast. Anglers can find fish in the 5-15lb range anywhere around shallow water flats with lots of small silver finger mullet, as well as residential canals and deeper mangrove sloughs.
Red Snapper Beyond the “Season”
Well, the red snapper season dates have been announced and may I just say what a joke they are again this year. Captain Justin and I usually do not participate in the red snapper season in Atlantic federal waters (which consists of two whole days of fishing again this year🤣).
