Kayak Fishing: Pine Island Basin & Sam’s Creek
I don’t know about you all, but I am loving this early spring trend of weather we are on! The warmer weather has brought a very hot inshore bite for me the last two weeks. Last weekend brought an increase in numbers, and this week brought even more in terms of quantity, and some quality fish in the mix as well - let’s dive in!
Flats Drum on Lures
If you fish the flats in east central Florida you’ve likely encountered black drum. Little slot sized drum up to big brutes that weigh 25 pounds or more inhabit our shallows year around, although they are a little less prevalent in the summer. Black drum are crustacean eaters. Toss a shrimp, chunk of crab or piece of clam in their path and they are probably going to eat. The real challenge comes when you try to catch them on artificials.
Fish Starting to Feed Again
Well, the fish finally emerged from their slumber. The water warmed up slightly, and so did the bite! Hopefully, this trend continues throughout the month. We experienced a significant temperature spike to 68-71 degrees along the Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach shorelines.
Looking Forward to this Week Offshore
On a good note the weather looks great this week for offshore fishing. We are locked and loaded and ready to roll. How is fishing you ask? I think it'll be just fine.
Tough Fishing, but Bite Improving
The weather last week has heated up as well as the inshore fishing. While there’s been plenty of bait and game fish nearshore the seas have been a bit too rough to consistently get out and target them. Inshore has been tough fishing but this last week was a vast improvement over the rest of the winter.
Headwaters Report
The lake is 12.8” above regulation. Water temps are around 74 degrees when I’m starting. The boat ramp is clear but there is a grass island close to the ramp. The S Canal was slightly blocked this morning but is now clear.
Fronts Still Impacting Water Clarity & Temp
Good morning, Sebastian Inlet fishing fans. Here’s the latest of what's happening at the inlet, and again, it will be brief as it hasn't been all that good. As long as these fronts move across the state and impact water clarity and temperature, fishing will be hit-or-miss.
Nice Weather
It’s starting to look like winter is in the past and Spring has arrived here in Central Florida. The weather has definitely been quite nice with temperatures in the 70’s I could ask for just a tad less wind but we can’t get spoiled.
Headwaters & Garcia Fishing Better
Headwaters and Garcia both fished better last week. Topwater lures are finally getting some action. Finding scattered and submerged hydrilla areas held most of our fish.
Nice Lane & Mangroves
Despite the crazy weather, the past week has been very good. We had success both inshore and offshore with good catches of black drum and redfish inshore and offshore we landed some really nice lane snapper and mangrove snapper.
Weekend Radio Report
Get the latest word on the bite with Damon from Spacefish on the Mark Moses Show. We talk local fishing every Friday on the air at 4pm.
Crazy Live Bait Bite @ Headwaters
The lake is 14” above regulation. Water temps are around 69 degrees when I’m starting and by the late afternoon will peak at 73. The boat ramp is clear and the S Canal is slightly plugged but easy to get around it.
