WEEKLY FORECAST
8.27.2019 – 9.2.2019
A CENTRAL FLORIDA FISHING FORECAST EVERY TUESDAY
The slimy conditions in the Satellite Beach surf, as captured on Sunday by Ryan Clapper Photography.
SUMMER OF SLIME CONTINUES
It will be an interesting week ahead with Labor Day, the opening of Snook Season (Sept. 1st), and Tropical Storm Dorian all on a collision course for the weekend. Also noteworthy is the good news that the summer-long scourge of sargassum seaweed has finally lightened up! The bad news is that an even slimier, stickier and more encumbering force of brown algae is now blanketing the surf across Brevard’s beaches. The exact source of this massive bloom of nastiness is currently unknown, but it has been linked to everything from global warming to Chinese tariffs. Spacefish does not have a marine biologist on staff, but if we had to guess, it might also have something to do with unsafe levels of enteric (AKA fecal) bacteria recently sampled in the water. Gross.
Check out the photos posted on Facebook by Ryan Clapper and you will get a good idea of just how thick and sprawling this brown algae is. Note, however, that the algae line remains pretty tight and compact in proximity to the shore. If one had, say, a kayak, then avoiding the mess and getting into some good fishing from the beach would be pretty simple. Don’t have a kayak, you say? Well, we’re giving away a brand new one next week, courtesy of Cocoa Beach Surf Co. Maybe you’ll be the big winner! The winner will be announced in next week’s forecast and will get his or her choice among three different fishing-ready kayaks. Register for the contest below if you haven’t already signed up — and good luck!

WEATHER OVERVIEW: Right now, Tropical Storm Dorian is tracking right towards Florida. Whether that path diverges, and to which strength the storm may grow, is anyone’s guess. We’ll know more as the week progresses. Weather is tricky, be it forecasting tropical activity, or even normal, local, summertime patterns. For the past couple of months we have (for the most part) enjoyed calm, hot days with the exception of the consistent volatility brought by thunderstorms. This week however, be prepared for an uptick in the wind come Thursday and on through the weekend. If venturing offshore, please be careful and make sure all of your safety equipment is tight and right. Do not chance it. If you have any reservations, just stick to the nearshore or inshore fisheries, which have both been producing some good fishing. The breeze will otherwise bring a welcome break from these hot summer temperatures. Although there won’t be a massive reduction in temperature, a few degrees will be nice, especially in the evenings with a cold beverage in hand.
