Post-Ian Fishing
This past week has been trying to say the least. Hurricane Ian came to pay a visit to the state of Florida and definitely left his mark.
Finding Better Conditions in the Surf
Space Coast surf fishing takes off with the mullet run in full effect. If your surfing or swimming pick up your toes!! It’s lively out there.
Take A Break from Offshore
If you're thinking about going offshore, don't. Stay home and wait until this ocean cleans up! We fished the last few days after Ian and the water was straight mud to the 27 ft. We actually caught 1 grunt and 1 beeliner, lol. The ocean may appear calm and pretty but, but don't be deceived, it's muddy. This is your honest report.
Back at it After the Storm
We took a few days off and gave the fish a break while the weather was nasty. However, we’re back at it again this week fishing the mullet run along the near coastal waters. Redfish, ladyfish, jack's and snook are the four most common species that we are catching right now.
Lots of Freshwater in Lagoon
Hurricane Ian definitely put a damper on the amount of time spent fishing this week. We have already had a bunch of freshwater in the lagoon and Ian added a lot more. But, we have had a pretty good inshore bite the last few weeks. Snook, Redfish and trout along with plenty of jacks, ladyfish and a few catfish in the mix. Live baits and artificial have all been productive.
Mullet Still Getting Blasted
The mullet are here and they are getting blasted by everything from tarpon, sharks, redfish, and of course, snook. The hardest part will be locating the bait and the predators, but once you do, try a big swim bait, a big spoon, or a big plug such as an x rap or a Yozuri crystal minnow. I have been having the most success using live bait around Sebastian inlet.
Kayak Fishing Report: Pine Island Conservation Area – Sam’s Creek
I hope that everyone was able to weather the storm, and that no one’s home or property was damaged. The way it has felt outside since the storm passed, with crisp cool mornings, and highs in the lower 80's it feels like fall is creeping its way here on the Space Coast.
Pre-Storm Fishing
The Ocean Obsession out of Sunrise Marina at Port Canaveral has had their customers on the fish! Right before the effects of the storm hit they were catching a number of tasty fish like black-fin tuna, snapper and cobia.
Kayak Fishing Report: The Calm Weekend Before The Storm
Saturday evening I was on the Eau Gallie River, the Elbow Creek stretch, and there were hundreds of White Ibises perched in the mangroves. I thought that was cool, it was beautiful and kind of ominous at the same time. The Ibis is synomous with hurricanes, that's why Miami's mascot is Sebastian the Ibis.
Inshore Slam – Tourney Wrap Up
The Inshore Slam Tournament held on 9/17/22 @ Old Florida Grill in Port St John was a huge hit with over 30 participants competing for the largest slot slam combined and the Calcutta was the largest caught Spotted Sea Trout.
Surf Producing A Mixed Bag
Surf fishing charters along the Space Coast have provided for a mixed bag of species. Snook continue to highlight the day with larger fish remaining amongst the most commonly caught. With the fall mullet run in full effect this trend looks to continue into the next couple weeks until the water temperatures drop and these baitfish move down to the south.
Hoping the Mullet Run Stays Strong
Through the early and mid week, the bite on the beach was pretty good with Tarpon feeding on mullet schools, up until the swells picked up. Later in the week, the bite slowed a bit with some north wind and heavy seas.
