Kayaking Canaveral Barge Canal from the Indian River to Drawbridge
Watching daybreak on the water or in the woods has been a joy to me ever since I was young, This morning to say the least it was a bit brisk. I slid on my pair of fishing gloves remembering that a year ago I was staying in a log cabin catching Steelhead.
Kayaking the west side north of 528 causeway
I got to sneak out for about an hour and a half this morning after waiting out the rain. On the way paddling to some docks that I wanted to fish, there was a shore-to-shore full rainbow. I was tossing either a blue and white buck tail jig or a red and white topwater anytime I saw a mullet jumping.
Big Reds Active Inshore, but Bad Weather through Thursday
There have been a lot of big reds on the eastern shoreline North Indian River Lagoon between North Merritt Island and east of Titusville. The fish have been scattered in the North Merritt Island area and blind fishing chunks in 2-4 ft deep has been the best bet. I have seen some tailers that wouldn't eat a thing or spook. The water has been murky NASA Causeway southward.
Snookie Time
It’s time to get a little snookie, and I ain’t talking about the Jersey Shore! Snook season is upon us and I couldn’t be more excited. With several recent years of warm winters under our belt, the stocks of snook in our area have skyrocketed. Typically, we are considered the north end of the snook range, but these warm spells have put us in a different category.
Summertime… and the Fishing’s Easy
The seas are calm, the air is warm, and the bite is great. Conditions are especially favorable right now for kayak anglers looking to tear it up on the beach. With schools of bait so close to shore, you don't have to paddle very far to land big fish, and you never know what you might catch.
What Kayak Anglers Wait For…
The last week has ushered in what many of us kayak anglers wait for. Warm water and a flat ocean. The tarpon have showed up and the bait is here. Our traditional pogie schools have not come through so look to pilchards and threadfins to fill the gap.
Keep It Simple Smarty-pants
Summer is here. With only a few weeks until the kids are done with school and ever warming days, it's a great time of the year! Introducing the younger people in your life to the outdoors, particularly fishing, has rewards for all involved.
Consider Catch and Release for All Lagoon Fish
This week's fishing will be a bit tough with the high winds mid-week, however, look for it to be real nice as the weekend sets in. For kayak fishing search out the backwater areas of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge.
Spring is Here! (kind of)
Near-coastal fishing will get increasingly better with more and more target game fish showing up week after week. Be on the lookout for massive schools and black drum, tripletail and the possibility of cobia popping up.
