Some Fish Still Recovering from Cold Shock

According to the 10 day forecast we may be out of the frozen tundra weather for awhile here in the New Smyrna Beach area. The forecast is calling for highs in the 70’s with some clear skies making for some great fishing on Mosquito Lagoon and the surrounding waters. The water temps are a little cool at the moment but should be back to probably mid 60’s by the weekend if the weather conditions continue.

The snook definitely seem to be in a state of shock which I kinda do not blame them as I myself am still getting over the freezing temps. The redfish and black drum can be found on the shallow sand and mud flats looking for an easy meal. The trout and snook have found shelter in deeper water until the water temps really start to warm.

As I said before it looks as though Central Florida will be in a warming trend over the next week and I’m looking forward to some nice weather.

Warming Trend Should Activate Bite

black drum

Water temperatures have been cool and fishing has been a little challenging with the wind, but we’ve had some nice catches of redfish, black drum with some trout here and there. With the warming trend this week the fish should get much more active and February should bring some incredible fishing. I have dates available so let’s go fishing. Strong Post-front Bite

redfish

Looks as though we are getting another blast of arctic air moving into the New Smyrna Beach area this week. The frontal weather does affect the fish for a day or so especially in the shallow water of Mosquito Lagoon but the bite gets really strong on the days after the front passes. The redfish, trout, black drum and snook have all been chewing well after this past front as I expect the same routine after this front as well. Down sizing baits and slower retrieves will be the key to trigger bites in these clean and cooler water temperatures. Small soft plastics and live shrimp along with cut bait have been working well. After these cool conditions move out of the Central Florida area expect the bite to only get stronger each day.

A Gift that Keeps on Giving

redfish mosquito lagoon

It seems as though Mother Nature just keeps sending us some weather like a gift that just keeps giving. The fishing has been holding strong through all these fronts and if you get out a couple days after the front on the low winds and warm up the bite is even better. With the north and north west winds it has emptied a lot of the water making for some great sight fishing on both black drum and redfish. The water is a bit cool so the trout and snook seem to have hunkered down in some deeper holes and troughs but still chewing as the sun gets higher. The extended forecast is looking like another front on the horizon with a higher rain chance into the weekend.

Little Change in Mosquito Lagoon

Little Change in Mosquito Lagoon

mosquito lagoons seatrout

The bite has changed a little bit over the last couple of days. We have some pretty cool water temperatures here in the New Smyrna Beach waters especially in the shallow water of Mosquito Lagoon. These cooler temperatures do affect some species and not so much to others like redfish and black drum. The trout and snook definitely do not like the cooler temperatures and seem to be hanging in much deeper water waiting on the water to warm just a bit before becoming active again. The great thing about our waters here in Central FL is that they are extremely shallow for the most part so with a couple of bright sunny warmer days the trout and snook will be right back to chewing like the redfish and black drum are now.

It looks as though we are going to have a few days of cooler temperatures and will be back on the rise after this front passes. The water clarity has been great making for some great sight fishing to larger pods of redfish and black drum in shallow water.

Cold Weather, Low Water, Great Fishing

big black drum

The fishing has been great with the cold weather and low water. Redfish and black drum are schooling in the shallows and will readily eat soft plastics, shrimp tipped jigs or a naked hook with a shrimp and small split shot. Look for deeper edges on the colder days early in the morning for redfish, trout and black drum. You can find these fish on the eastward facing shorelines late morning sunning themselves. January can be some of the best fishing of the year. It’s a great time to book a charter by calling 386-295-5991!

Tough Sight Fishing Conditions

mosquito lagoon seatrout

It’s hard to believe that we are now in 2025, but with being said the 2024 fishing year was very good and I expect the same for this year. This past week has been a continuation of weird weather with warmer conditions, rain, wind and cloudy. It has made it quite difficult to sight fish especially in the open waters of Mosquito Lagoon so we have been focusing on points and bars up in and around New Smyrna Beach area. The bait choice has been a variety of things from shrimp, cut bait, finger mullet, spoons and soft plastics.

The forecast for the up coming week shows a lot of sunshine with a pretty big cool down into next week which should continue to keep these fish firing. Happy New Year to everyone!

Inconsistent Weather, Good Bite

mosquito lagoon redfish

The inconsistent weather continues here in Central Florida with cool temperatures and wind to clouds and rain. But even with some crazy weather lately the bite still continues to be good. We have been boating several species on each trip like trout, redfish and snook just to mention a few. The water clarity is great and when weather allows is making for some great sight fishing from New Smyrna Beach south throughout Mosquito Lagoon. It looks as though we are going to get a little warmer weather heading our way into next week and then another possible cool down afterwards.

Low Waters in Mosquito Lagoon

mike mann

The water has been very low. The fish have been eating smaller 3 inch paddle tales or a shrimp tipped jig working the edge to the flats. This last cold front has dropped the water to 63° but will probably warm a little bit over the holidays with highs in the 70s. Working the edges where there is mullet, speckled sea trout have been readily available using a paddle tail or a top water plug early in the morning. As we get into the new year, look for large schools of redfish and black drum to move into the flats and eat a naked shrimp or a shrimp on a jig head.

I have days available in January. You can reach me by phone or you can go right to my website Fat Fish Guide Service. Have a Merry Christmas.

Pressure Didn’t Faze Bite

seatrout

There has been a little low pressure rising up from the Caribbean this past week bring us some wet and windy weather but it did seem to faze the bite. We are continuing to boat several species like trout, redfish, snook and black drum making for a great time on the water. The bite has been good on both artificials and live bait like shrimp and finger mullet. The weather looks to be good into the week of Christmas which will just secure the bite even more.

Fish Holding Deep

seatrout

As the weather consistently keeps changing from hot to cold the fish have settled into their winter time pattern. Look for the redfish, trout and black drum to holding in and around the sand holes and mud bottoms. Smaller baits and slower action has worked well with the crystal clear low water conditions we currently have. Small artificial’s like soft plastics and spoons have been working well along with cut bait and shrimp . It looks as though we have another cold front moving into the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area by the the end of the week which will secure them in their winter time pattern.

Drum Fishing On Fire

The red fishing and black drum fishing has been on fire this past week and with the entrance of another massive cold front look for the bike to continue. Redfish as well as black drum have started to school up in schools of 50 to 150 fish, which is incredible to see in the crystal clear water of Mosquito Lagoon.
