snook at jetty

Giovanni Distefano came from Leesburg to fish the inlet and hooked up with this beaut are just a couple casts. He caught this snook with a shrimp rigged on a two-ounce egg sinker and 30-pound leader with a swivel.

Good morning all you Sebastian Inlet fishing junkies, hope everyone had a great weekend, even though it was pretty cold and windy!

This report is going to be another short one as nobody has been out due to the cold weather, very brisk winds and rough seas. All which makes for lousy fishing, especially at the inlet! For the most part, ever since last Thursday when the weather took a turn for the worst, the ocean has been roughed up and dirty, especially south side of the inlet; also, the water temps along our coastline from Canaveral to Wabasso have been in the lower 60’s, from Wabasso south it is 74 degrees. So not good conditions for the fish to want to play in our neighborhood.

Not a lot of folks out fishing, but before all this, they were catching nice numbers of black drum, some pompano and whiting on the north jetty on dead and live shrimp, as well as cut clams. The tip of the jetty both sides was the place to be. I also noted when I was down there before the weather set in, we saw some schools of the big bluefish swimming around the north jetty. Large spoons and cut baits will work for them. The south side and the surf area was a very dirty mess with all the runoff water coming out on the outgoing tide and flowing down the beach just shut everything down except for the catfish and stingrays. Not much else to report for the rest of the inlet as nobody has been out fishing.

For the remainder of the week the winds are supposed to switch to the SSE and blow 10-20 all week, and the seas are supposed to be 3-4 feet all week too. This pattern will allow the water to warm up some, but unfortunately will also dirty it up some more, especially the south side, the north side may stay pretty clean, and that might be the place to be. I wish I had better news, but that is it, in a nutshell. I have to keep reminding myself, it’s wintertime. So if you do go out, good luck, and I hope you can find a nice spot to fish and catch something.
