I took a week away from the freshwater and hit up the Lagoon. It’s been some time since I’ve been there but during the summer months it can get quite slow for fishing. What changed my mind is all the hype every year about this time of a thing called The Mullet Run.
My first day of three, I was not disappointed as it was the best of the three. My first spot I stopped at usually is too shallow to get into, but the water levels are up with all the rain we have had. There was bait everywhere which consisted of some mullet but millions of glass minnows. Topwater walking type lures were my first choice of technique of an offering which within just a few minutes gave me my first of two slot snook and several smaller ones. After the fish slowed down on that presentation, I picked up my favorite little suspending jerk bait with a color pattern to match the hatch.
The second day, I changed 180 degrees and used my fly rod instead. I noticed the change of the bait activity was less but the blow ups I saw were on the many pods of glass minnows. Once the sun got up higher the bite slowed to a halt in the first area I fished. I moved to a favorite little area in the open water that usually gives up some mangrove snapper which I had hoped to bring a few back for dinner. It was game on for about two hours throwing my fly and the suspending lure. The pompano showed up too. The third day was much slower than the other two days but nonetheless a good time to be out on the waters. It was also the hottest day of the three as well. Fall is knocking on the door in some small ways like my Crepe Myrtles are dropping their leaves and my grass is slowing down growth, but the heat is still hanging around longer.
