The water temp was 80 degrees when we started this morning. The artificial bite is pretty steady until noon. The live bait bite is still excellent. We have been burning through 3 dozen baits the first hour of the day and 8-10 dozen before 10am.
Top baits this week for me were Zman EVO chatterbaits, Bass Assassin RSB worms, Zman Poppin Shadz and the Mike Bucca Trick Shad 6”.
I’m fishing the Zman EVO Chatterbaits (Spot Remover and Golden Shiner) on flats with scattered hydrilla in 5’ or less. I only use 1/2oz chatterbaits so they keep contact with the grass or they stay on the water better when im burning it. I’ve been using a 4” Zako trailer that matches my chatterbait. My line of choice is Ande black braid (50lb) and the rod I prefer is a Dobyns Champion 736CB Glass.
We are fishing the Bass Assassin RSB worms weightless or an 1/8-1/4oz tungsten weight depending on the wind conditions. I’m using a 5/0 VMC Redline EWG hook, 50lb Ande black braid and my rod is a Dobyns DX784.
The 6” Mike Bucca Bull Gill in Gizzard color is my go to swimbait this week. I’m fishing these along grass edges near deep sharp drops or cuts near main canals. It is a fish catcher and it will work all over Headwaters. Swim these just under the surface for best results. Get on the Bullshad email mailing list so you can get the bait drop info.
It’s that time of year to be chucking a Zman Poppin Shadz in Breaking Bream, Mud Minnow or Redbone. The trick with these is to use a 6/0 EWG hook, 2 Harmony Bait Pegs (Size2) and fish it slow. The bait pegs hold the bait straight and prevent it from folding up when you cast. Dobyns Champion 744 for the rod of choice.
