Last week’s rain was much needed for our area. When we get that much in such a short time there is one thing a bass angler will focus on and that is Moving Water. Here in Florida we have thousands of flood gates that will open or close due to heavy rains. If you’re lucky enough like my friend and I yesterday to pull up to one of these situations and be the only boat to fish it for 5 hours, it was nothing short of Epic. We boated 68 bass in that 5 hours. Setting the trolling motor on Spot Lock we stayed in one spot without moving and caught bass after bass. Throwing a Carolina Rig caught many fish but I started using a 1/2 oz Yo Zuri Lipless Rattlin Vibe crankbait and caught many fish.
The current was ripping out of the spillway so fast that it was hard to get the lure deep enough so, I would let it sink without retrieving it at first, then I would Yo Yo the lure as it swept in the current which resulted in many violent bites. For the Carolina Rig a 3/4 oz weight was needed to get to the rocky bottom and bounce in the current. This kind of opportunity won’t last long once the flood gates close off soon. All we need now is for these high winds to back off to be able to fish the open water areas.
