headwaters lake bass fishing

I was able to tag along with my friend again to fish Headwaters Lake last week. We fished the same areas and some newer areas both days. The big bites are still not happening on artificial lures but we managed several in the 4-5 pound size which is okay by me. The lure of choice again is a suspending jerkbait and a soft plastic 5″ Gambler EZ Swimmer in the Copperfield color.

We are finding fish adjacent to deeper pits that have 17′ water depth. Working our lures on the edges of the deeper water seems to be the ticket for our bites. Once the fish stop taking the jerkbaits, I switch over to the soft plastic adding a 3/16 bullet weight. This technique will work deeper in the water column and slow rolling through the sparse hydrilla keeps the bite going. The key is to slow down and feel the grass with the lure swimming through the grass.

The water depths are still falling but we are starting to get more rains to stabilize it somewhat. Water temperatures are creeping into the mid 80’s and soon we’ll have the 90’s probably in a few weeks to come.
