The ocean has been beautiful. Calm, clear water thanks to an abundance of light and westerly wind. Down south in Melbourne Beach, the sea turtles have been busy nesting, and they’ve been hanging out in the water for several hours following sunrise and also preceding sunset. How cool is that!?!?

Pompano Summer?

I don’t recall ever catching pompano at such a high clip this far into the summer. Is this a product of a late migration? I think so. Over the past month, I’ve brought home a lot of them. This weekend, I caught 12 total pompano in about 5 hours over two separate outings, and only 1 cleared 11″ (just barely, too). Typically, the smaller schoolies round out the end of the spring run, and that’s what it looks like we’re seeing now.

PSA: Sting Ray Tastes REALLY Good

I tasted sting ray once before years ago. A buddy caught and cooked it, and I thought it was delicious, but I was also half in the bag at the time. I had been wanting to try it again for a while to confirm that it’s good eating, and was presented the opportunity while fishing the surf on Sunday when we hooked into a ~10 pounder that snapped the rod. While 100% sober, I filleted and skinned the wings, and readied the Fry Daddy. It was confirmed by multiple parties that string ray is 100% delicious table fare.
