Here in Volusia County we are still dealing with light weeds and dirty water. Prime time has been early morning until 10am or so and in the afternoon from around 4pm to dark. With whiting, pompano and catfish being the hot bite. Fresh shrimp and live sand fleas being the bait of choice along with electric chicken crab fish bites.

The time we have been hoping wouldn’t happen here in the area has started. The weeds are starting to push in with the rough surf…

This week the surf fishing has been on fire been hearing and seeing pompano from Jacksonville to South Florida with the main body being from Daytona to Juno using live sand fleas, shrimp, fresh clams, all flavors of fish bites and fish gum.

This week has been hit and miss in the surf, but the main bite in the surf has been some nice whiting and tons of bluefish, with a few pompano getting caught in the area. The main body of the pompano have made their way to South Florida. For me, the hot bite has been on fresh shrimp, however Fish Bites and fish gum have been producing also. The Fish Bites clam and sand flea flavor along with the ghost crab fish gum have been working well. But, you will need to make the longer cast to get on the better fish. The first part of the incoming tide has been producing better for me this week.

The early morning surf bite has been on fire the past week with pompano, whiting, and bluefish being the hot action. Good numbers of pompano have been getting caught all the way from Jacksonville to Melbourne. The bite has been shutting down around 10-1030am.

The surf has started to clean up from the storm and the cold fronts are starting to move through the area cooling off the water temperature and getting the fall pompano migration started. Good numbers have been coming in around the state with big numbers in the Jacksonville area right now. The hot bait has been crab knuckles, live sand fleas and fresh clams. Fish bites white and yellow crab, coquina clam and sand flea flavor has also been producing.

Still dealing with some weeds in the area, but the large bait pods have started running up the beach and along with the bait pods have come the tarpon large schools of 100 pound class fish, large jacks, and the sharks. The large predator fish are not the only things running right now, the resident pompano have been coming in great numbers to the north end of the county along with good numbers of whiting. With fresh dead shrimp and live sand fleas being the bait of choice. Finding the deeper holes and guts past the sandbars will provide great success.

This week has been a tough one for the surf fishing, with the storms popping up and the hard running current. The guys fishing the deep cuts between the sandbars with fresh shrimp, live sand fleas, fish gum and fish bites have been producing a few nice whiting, croakers, and of course, catfish. The bait pods have started running the beach now also and it is only a matter of time for the big tarpon and redfish to show with them.

The weather has started to heat up and water temperatures are on the rise. The best times for the surf has been early morning to mid afternoon and then again late afternoon to the evening and after dark. The pompano bite has been hot early with several limits coming in if you’re willing to work at it. Be willing to make a move, and read the beach and the surf to find that perfect spot and make super long casts. Bait of choice has been fresh shrimp, live sand fleas, small crabs, along with fish bites and fish gum on standard pompano rigs with small pearlized beads.

This past week we had great surf conditions after the weeds pushed out and the water cleared up. The main catch this week was large whiting and pompano.
