One of the few captains born and raised in the area and has been fishing from Port Canaveral to Vero Beach for over 24 years. Being on the water around 250 days a year between commercial fishing and charters, he is sure to find some fish no matter the conditions.
April is the month of the Mahi! With the strong West wind we have been experiencing this month, the dolphin have been pushed further offshore than we normally find them this time of the year. Most of the fish are being caught between 250 and 600 feet of water along with some insane catches happening on the “other side.”
We have had a few beautifull days lately and the cobia bite on the offshore ledges has been going off! Live baits on the bottom have been a recipe for success for these delicious brutes.
Well, we finally had a few days of beautiful weather recently that allowed us to run offshore. The bottom bite has picked up with the water clarity getting better. Fishing has been really good for lane and mangrove snapper on the 60 and 90 foot ledges. There have been a few straggler mahi and cobia swimming up to the boat, as well.

The kingfish bite just keeps getting better and better out of Sebastian Inlet. Two weeks ago the bite was hot, but this past week it’s been straight up explosive! These fish seem to be on every rock and every piece of structure that you can imagine, all the way out to 100 feet. Bait hasn’t really seemed to matter, either. They are destroying lives almost instantly. For the bigger kings, an 8-10″ slow-trolled live mullet has been hard to beat.
This one was a tough week of offshore fishing. We had dirty water and lots of current along the 60-90 foot reefs. The mangrove snapper bite slowed after the full moon but should pick back up this week approaching the new moon as long as the water quality gets better.
This week is all about the “endangered” red snapper! So far this has been the easiest season that we have had. They have been on almost every piece of ledge from the 90 out to the 240 stuff. Not only have the reds been abundant they’ve been hungry! Live bait or dead bait hasn’t mattered, but generally the bigger the bait the bigger the fish. Live pinfish and pilchards have been the bait of choice for us this week with frozen sardines catching their fair share as well. An 8 foot 60-80 leader on a sliding sinker rig has been doing the trick.
The offshore bite has been red hot as of late! Kingfish are leading the pack for the past week, they have been stacked up from the beach and any structure all the way out to the 90 foot ledges. Slow trolling a live threadfin or mullet on #5 wire has been the ticket, with the better bites coming early in the morning. There have been a few decent dolphin bites reported trolling out in 500 feet this week as well, but trolling this time of the year can be hit or miss.
