Ray Zaballa with a good looking mutton!

Good morning all my fishing fanatic’s!! Hope everyone had a great weekend, and a Happy Mother’s Day was had by all the moms out there, hope you all had a great day as well! With that being said, off we go into the wild outdoors and the fishing!

Last week at the inlet was shaping up to be really good after Monday’s windy start. The water was cleaning up and calming down really nicely and warming up to where it should be for this time of the year, 79 degrees along the coast, and the bait fish were showing up. Wednesday and Thursday on both sides of the inlet the snook bite on live majorras was going off nicely with quite a few slot fish being caught in the 29-31 inch range on the incoming tides. The south jetty was the hot spot all along the wall from the tip of the jetty westward to the catwalk. There were also a lot of small undersized fish being caught as well to keep it kind of busy. The north side was pretty good as well, just not as busy as the south side, but bigger fish mostly oversized.

I did see a smattering of different species caught around the inlet, but nothing to write home about or pinpoint. A few pompano and some whiting and black drum were caught on the north side on fresh cut shrimp, and I did see one small mutton snapper caught, but it was too small to keep. They have to be 19 inches minimum.

Then the big winds came again, and the seas picked up again on late Thursday and into Friday and just messed it all back up. Very dirty and silted up water along with a lot of seaweed just put a stop to just about everything! The only thing I saw being caught all weekend while I was there were those pesky catfish, some stingrays and saw quite a few blacktip or spinner sharks swimming around on the north side. I saw about 8-10 of them at one time coming out of the inlet. They looked to be in the 5-6 ft range. Sorry for the short report again, but the winds had put a damper on the fishing once more. I’m not going to break things down this time as no area was showing any signs of being a “hot spot” after Friday. It’s supposed to be a nice week and not so windy, so we’ll see what plays out with that, also the seas are supposed to be a bit calmer as well. So with that, grab your gear, beach chairs, some bait and get out and go fishing, or just beaching it. Find some clean water, you never know what’s going to show up for dinner!
