tripletail

Well Gang, it’s been an interesting few weeks since my last Spacefish report. Obviously, when you have winds out of every possible direction in such a short period of time, it doesn’t give you much chance of establishing a pattern in the lagoons or along the near-coastal coastal waters. Along the beach, tripletail were good off and on, and cobia would pop-up on a few of the calmer days off of Playalinda Beach and also off of Satellite Beach.

The tripletail were looking for small crabs, minnows and shrimp that we’re holding in the sargasso weed that had blown inshore with all of the east wind that we’ve had lately. The cobia were following manta rays along temperature boundaries where plankton congregations occurred as they migrate northward. So, we did have a few days where the spring cobia run did materialize. Once our current windy weather calms, I will be back out there looking for both species and for the areas where these favorable conditions will show up again. Until then, I will be relegated to fishing the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian and Banana, rivers for red fish, trout, and black drum. These three species have actually been pretty darn good on most days. A live whole crab seems to be working best for the drum and redfish in the deeper areas along drop offs and channel edges. In the lagoon flats, cut baits like pinfish, mullet or ladyfish have been working best because the water is dirty and it has been a little difficult to get them to find a live shrimp.

We all know that the March timeframe can be challenging, but if you put the time in you should be able to catch some really good fish. If you have a need for a charter Captain to help you with that, obviously I would love to be the guy that you call. Let’s get out there and catch your next memory!
