beach tarpon

Sean and Don with a couple nice tarpon off the beach!

We had a couple of days to get off the beach after Hurricane Idalia and found some tarpon and sharks. Swell was pretty big but there was some bait around and a few fish if you found the bait pods. Snook were also hitting in the trough, but swells were too big to get to them by boat.

Inshore, the water is starting to clear up. There are still a few greenies and pogies around and there are some mullet moving pretty good in a few areas. Despite the dirty water and fish kills, we found a decent number of trout as well as some snook and redfish. With the rains letting off the water is starting to clear up in a lot of places so the sight fishing should be pretty good as we move forward as long as the rains don’t keep dumping on us.

Mullet should start showing up pretty good along the beaches and the sharks and tarpon should be close behind. If the finger mullet stay in the trough the snook will be plentiful along the beaches as well. Inshore bite will improve once the mullet get thick and the water cleans up. Live mullet along the mangroves is the best bet but soft plastics and topwater will be productive early as well.
