Well, it’s the start of tarpon season in the New Smyrna area with schools of bait fish along the beach. Tarpon are starting to show up in the rivers as well as the inlet. Look for large bait schools along the beach and in the inlet being fed upon by tarpon, jacks, sharks and kingfish. A well-placed bait to the edge of the schools should be rewarded. Inshore the trout bite is starting to turn on. They will eat topwater, soft plastics and popping corks with either a live shrimp or an imitation shrimp below it. This is a great time of year for offshore bottom fishing, especially with grouper opening up as of May 1st. Nearshore and inshore will be firing as well.
