That summer heat is starting to show up, and the fish are definitely feeling it! The baby sharks are loving it though, they’ve been everywhere, eating anything they can find. Some whiting have been mixed in, and those dreaded catfish are enjoying the warm water as well.
This week, we’ve got a higher chance of rain to cool things off, but y’all know how a 40–50% chance of rain goes. It’s either a full-on monsoon or just cloudy with some sun peeking through. Waves will stay around 1–2 feet throughout the week, so no need for sputniks.
I’ve also heard reports of thermocline showing up on some beaches, making the water chilly close to shore. That slimy stuff has been showing up too, getting all over fishing lines “whale snot,” as everyone calls it haha.
When fishing slows down in the summer and the surf is calm, a lot of people like to fish close to the shore for palometas. They’re super fun to catch on a 7-foot rod with light tackle, and they’re great eating too! To rig for them, just use about 3 feet of 20–25 lb monofilament with a sliding sinker ranging from 1–2 ounces, and toss it out there with a live or frozen shrimp. If you prefer a traditional pompano rig, go with small floats or no float at all this time of year. A 2–4 ounce lead will do the trick, and you’re good to go. That’s all I’ve got for this week, it’s going to be hot, hot, hot. Tight lines, everyone!
