Happy Monday Spacefish!
Happy Monday Spacefish!
I had a chance to on Sunday, I made my first trip to Stick Marsh since before the draw down. I have been there since Christmas time last year, and to be honest, it really wasn’t my day! Due to my lack of success, and limited time on the water over the weekend, this will not be a very long report.
I feel like there were several reasons why for the first time ever since I started fishing at Stick Marsh, that this was a lackluster day could have been for several reasons. The first is more personal and unique – which is I got on the water later in the day, it was bright, sunny, and warm, and there just did not seem to be much going on in terms of fish activity, I didn’t even see any Alligators swimming around. The second personal reason is that as I have mentioned before I have been neck deep in football season, and just haven’t been putting as much time into prepping for fishing outings, so I just showed up and did the best I could. I was on the water from 11 am – 2:30 pm, and caught 4 total Bass, all on the smaller scale.
Now other reasons that I consider to be worth mentioning is location, I was fishing down the east bank of the lake, and I have never had as much success in that area, I was also trying to keep myself in wind protected areas as much as I could, and that might not have been the best strategy, as typically I try to find moving water, but due to the winds being pretty strong, I felt like being able to stay wind protected was my best bet.
Either way, I was able to find a few fish by fishing a trick worm – the Fish, or Die Musket in Junebug Red, I rigged it on a ¼ oz Red Swivel Jighead from Mission Fishin’ Lures, I caught 3 fish on this presentation, I was throwing it up against the reeds and edges of grass islands, and just slowly hopping it back to the kayak, with long pauses on the bottom. I also caught 2 fish on a Bitter’s Houdini colored Skip Shad (Fluke) rigged weightless and weedless on a 3/0 EWG Worm Hook. I was throwing it into sparse grass, and letting it sit for as long as possible, before giving it a jerk-jerk and then letting it sit for a few more seconds. Slow and subtle seemed to be the flavor of the afternoon.
I plan on going back to Stick Marsh again in the next week or so and getting back to areas in which I have had success before. I don’t want to make a knee jerk reaction, as this is a place that I have always enjoyed and have had success…maybe it was just a bad day for me, I am hoping so, because I have been nervous about fishing there since the drawdown. Let’s hope it’s just a user error and this fishery still produces like it has in the past!
I hope everyone has a great week ahead, enjoy the fall weather, and gets some time out on the water. Stay safe, be happy, and catch lots of fish! Until next time…
