I spent a couple of days giving the freshwater fishing a break and hit the Lagoon for a change up. My intentions were to leave the dock in the dark before the sun came up so to be in the spot I wanted to fish and hopefully get a snook on a topwater bite. It wasn’t in the cards, but a few trout were caught, so the idea wasn’t a bust. Once the sun came up the bait that was around me went deeper or left the area. I cranked up the Mercury and headed to my Plan B spot which is out in the open river not close to any kind of structure.
This area is close to a shallow flat and has 4-6 ft. of water. Jack Crevalle and ladyfish usually keep the rod bent in this area. What is a highlight though is the Bull Sharks that hang out and will sometimes attack what fish you may have hooked into. At one moment I had 4 sharks circling my boat. These sharks are about 7 ft long so any fish caught were brought into the boat to be released. No hand washing in the water for a while. I gave the sharks and prey a break and moved to my third and last spot to fish.
This spot has 3-4 ft of water depth that has mangroves running all the way down the canal on both sides. I strategically cast to spots along the bush with my favorite Yo Zuri suspending jerk bait hoping for a Bush Snook. Most these fish are 24 inches or smaller but on occasion a surprise of a full grown one will eat. All in all Plans A, B and C all gave me fish on these outings. Ending my day around 10:30 heading home for some air conditioning.
