Dang it’s hot out there! This week, we’ve been fishing Headwaters and Garcia, and it’s been all about the punch! We punched hydrilla edges next to deep water (4-8 feet) using an ounce and a quarter weight with a Bass Assassin Skunk Ape (Gravedigger and Blueberry). We caught several fish in the 5-7lb range on Headwaters. When the bait went through, we jig it up and down 4 or 5 times. If we didn’t get bit, pitch into another area a few feet away from where you just pitched. Frogs worked well next to reeds that had quick access to deep water. The key was fishing in clean water when throwing the frog. Walking frogs worked best fished slow with lots of pauses.
One of my favorite lures this time of year is the Zman Poppin Shadz in the Mud Minnow color (5in.) We are fishing these slow around hydrilla and pads. They hit this on the pause more so than when it was being worked. I like to pop it with my rods down toward the water and give it a pop just enough to get the bloosh sound then let it sit a few seconds. Just like a frog bite, make sure they eat it before setting the hook, when I feel weight I cross their eyes. Black and Blue speed worms and Rattle Traps (Chrome and Chartreuse) are working very well anywhere you can throw them. The shiner bite is still great!! After 10am I go to a free line and seem to catch better fish.
Garcia is fishing really good right now. The water is clean in the areas we fished. Frogs near pads, Rattle Traps, and Poppin Shadz worked for us. I know a few of my buddies were catching them on swim jigs and punching is always good.
Hope this helps you guys and good luck this week!
