port canaveral fishing forecast

December is finally here. The only thing you really need to know about this month in 2023 is if the seas are calm enough, go fishing.

Rough seas brought on by cold fronts don’t have the same effect as the rough seas brought by tropical storms that create large swells so it is very rare to have poor fishing. The live bait trolling will be incredible on any given structure 70 to 120 ft. Like I always say “when the kings happy, everyone is happy” king mackerel will dominate and the huge bull sharks will be ready to eat them as you hook them up. Try using a little heavier tackle and hooking them on single j or circle hooks in order to land them faster. You will miss some bites and pull off some fish but you will have plenty of opportunity and that is better than the sharks eating every fish you hook. When those bull sharks get close be ready with 60 to 80 lb test to winch cobias off there backs. If you don’t plane that cobia out quick he will be ate also.

We should also see our fair share of mahi, blackfin tuna and sailfish this month while live bait trolling if the sharks don’t eat them. Bottom fishing for mangrove and lane snapper will be excellent in 100ft or less. Again you have got to get them to bite oversized tackle and reel quick or the sharks will eat everyone you hook. There are a lot of other fishing methods that will produce fish in December but the slow trolling and shallower water bottom fishing is so good there is no real reason to bother with anything else. Merry Christmas everyone and we look forward to seeing you on the water.
