speckled trout

Our Mullet Run is starting to ramp up on our Lagoon System. Finding heavy concentrations of bait in a creek mouth type of an area will usually reward you with bites from snook, trout and reds. Getting to an area just before the sun starts to show is the priority as once the sun does get somewhat higher, the bait will go deeper if it can or vacate your spot. So your window of opportunity is about 90 minutes of having success or not.

lures

Lures of choice for me this past week were pretty much what last week’s adventures of fishing. If the water is calm enough, I throw the larger Wake Bait style lure, if there is some heavier chop, I throw a pencil style lure that will “Walk The Dog” for surface strikes. When the bait started to thin out and the topwater bite slowed, I changed over this time to something more unconventional to the way I fish in saltwater areas.

snook

We only had about 20” of water we were fishing so I tied on a lure that I have had great success with when at Garcia lately. It’s the YO ZURI wake bait that will run about 10” under the surface when retrieved quickly. The trout were killing it! It’s such an easy way of fishing as there is no jerk and pause style of a retrieve but just a steady crank of the handle kinda like using a spoon lure.

fish on

Until the weather gives the water temperatures some coolness to it I’m going to stay on the salt side of things. The only downside is the algae bloom that we are experiencing as visibility is near to nothing on our river at this time.
