We had a great week with good inshore and nearshore fishing. The bait run is getting started but it’s far from full effect yet, despite what people have been reporting. Anyone reporting that the mullet run is in full swing must have not seen a mullet run before.

The bait pods in the lagoon has the snook, jacks and trout following but the water temps are still at 90 degrees which is very hot this time of year. The recent rain, along with the longer nights and shortened days, should help lower the temps. Trout, snook, reds and jacks are eating live mullet, pigfish and pins early mornings and late evenings. Using the xrap twitching minnow and Storm 360GT coastal baits, we’ve been getting some snook, trout, ladyfish and jacks. The spoil islands and mangrove shorelines with glass minnows or mullet have been the best areas this last week.

The inlet bite has been hit or miss as the week progressed with live mullet pigfish and croakers. We caught plenty of snook and reds earlier in the week during both daytime and nighttime. There were some tarpon on bait pods last weekend but they became scarce as the week progressed. The schools of jacks running the beaches looking for a meal have been a treat when the tarpon and snook are hard to find.

With the swell, most of the bait we found has been close to shore and the snook and jacks were following. Its been tough to fish them with the swells so high from Florence breaking offshore. The northeast winds from this weekend should help the mullet, tarpon and sharks move south and get that mullet run going strong.
