Hope everyone had a good Christmas and ate plenty of cookies. Now it’s time to start catching some fish! The fish have been around with the water cooling down. It will be a little windy until Friday and into the weekend, but the surf looks relatively calm despite the wind.
There have been plenty of different species being caught, along with pompano. Black drum, bluefish, whiting, and jacks have all been tugging on the lines. The water has been a tad dirty, but for the most part it hasn’t ruined the fishing. Sand fleas have been the bait of choice, but make sure you always bring a backup like Blue Magic shrimp or clams—fish can be picky when it’s cold.
A standard pompano rig with orange, white, or pink floats paired with a smaller sputnik or a 3–5 oz pyramid lead has been the go-to setup. Don’t sleep on the mortician rig if you can tie it! The outgoing tide has still been the better tide to get into the fish, with the rising tide being hit or miss. Then again, fishing is always hit or miss, haha.
We are stocking sand fleas, live shrimp, and occasionally fiddlers right now, so if you can’t find fleas on the beach, stop in and grab a scoop.
As always, tight lines, and we’ll see y’all at the shop!
