Happy Monday Spacefish!
Today I am going to focus on a recent outing I had fishing Mosquito Lagoon & Haulover Canal with my friend Russel, aka Thumpr Fishing! We had a great time fishing with each other, and I am happy to report that upon returning to the Mosquito Lagoon that the grass is still there, and so are the Redfish! Let’s dive in.
Launch Spot
For this trip, we launched from the Bairs Cove Boat Ramp on the south side of Haulver Canal. We launched before any sunlight was on the horizon, and we started pedaling east, towards Mosquito Lagoon. An early highlight of the trip was I spooked a manatee and it almost tailwhipped me out of my kayak – by that point I was fully awake! We reached the end of the canal right as the visibility became good enough to cast, I had two topwater blow ups in the canal from Jacks, but they came unbuttoned – one of them was pretty big, and the other was small. After the boat traffic started to pick up we decided to go north and fish around the first couple of islands north of the canal.
Flats Fishing for Redfish
Flats Fishing for Trout
Once the sun started to rise in the sky, I was able to see pot holes in the grass flats – this was the key for catching a bunch of Trout, they were sitting down in the holes and were ambushing bait as it went over head – I caught a good number of Trout on the Yo-Zuri Pencil, but I also caught a few on the Clarity Fluke in “Glassy” – I had this bait rigged on a 3/0, ⅛ oz screw lock hook. Once the bite on the topwater died off, they were willing to bite the soft plastic jerk bait as it bounced in and out of the grass. I did not catch any Trout of notable size, but I had a lot of fun catching 15+ in a 2 hour span.
Looking for Bridge Monsters w/ Thumpr Fishing
So as I mentioned earlier, I met up and fished with my friend Russell, who I met earlier this year on instagram – he is an awesome dude, and has a YouTube channel that my boys and I love watching. It was so great to meet up with another hardcore Spece Coast kayak angler, but the main reason I wanted to do it, was to spend some time with Thumpr and to see if I could get on one of the big Bull Reds in the deep water of Haulover Canal. Sadly, we didn’t have any luck on this trip, but here is a picture of Thumpr’s PB Red from earlier this summer.
What a monster fish!!! We set up Fish Finder Rigs, and used bait. I won’t go into too much detail, since we did not have success on this trip bottom fishing; instead I am going to link a video from Thumpr Fishing – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBd8XEPJ19M
Please go check out his page, like and subscribe and all that good stuff. Thumpr is a great dude, a combat veteran, a patriot who has sacrificed much of himself and defended our freedoms to fish and enjoy the good life; now that he is retired he is chasing his dream of fishing and making videos, go show him some love! Hope we can fish again soon brother!
Conclusion
It was so nice to be able to go out and find a good number of fish on the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon, I plan to keep going up there every few months, one day I will find that legendary Bull Red prowling the flats!
