Even with all of the freshwater run-off, hot water and algae blooms there is still plenty of fish to be caught inshore here in the Indian River lagoon. The keys are getting out on the water early, find “cleaner” water (with less algae or turbidity) and fish areas that are being moved by wind. The wind oxygenates the water and helps cool it down a few degrees. Find these areas next to structure like mangroves and docks and you can catch a variety of fish using artificials or live bait. You may have to move around in the lagoon to find these kinds of spots but once you do take your time and fish it thoroughly. One of the tricks I use during the summer while fishing with artificials is that I downsize the lure. It makes a difference when the fish are being finicky. A smaller profile bait will catch a bigger variety of inshore species. This past weekend I was able to catch 7 Snook between 23 – 28 inches, 1 Redfish and 4 Seatrout, all on artificial lures using the same strategy. Good luck and tight lines!
