This week, on Headwaters Lake, the early bite was really good for us throwing hollow body frogs in tan or white. A bunch of the fish we caught choked the frog down the hatch. When the topwater bite slowed down we went to punching Bass Assassin Skunk Apes in St John’s color ( black and blue). Most of the fish we caught were along the edges of ditches in 4-8ft of water. If you could find more than one type of grass together those where our hot spots. 5″ Bass Assassin Vapor Shad’s in watermelon red or white worked in those same areas did very well. Mike Bucca Bullshads in 8″ bone or the 9″ BullGlide bone color worked slow under the surface caught our biggest fish this week.
I was fortunate enough to land a 9lber on the Bucca Burrito in Pearl white over in the pit in 18ft of water, swimming it really slow on the bottom. We did catch a few on the Luckycraft Super Sammy in gold shiner out in open water when the bass were chasing bait. Speedworms (RSB) in black with a blue tail was our most productive worm. Shiners on a free line once the sun came up was the best technique for live bait.
Keep an eye out for our fishing reports on YouTube. We are filming one tomorrow and you can find it under Headwater Headquarters Fishing Reports. We will get at least one up per week. If you guys like the written reports I will continue to do them, as well. I hope everyone enjoys their time on the water and catch some big fish. Hopefully these report will give you a little head start before you get out there and put a game plan together.
Tight lines friends!
Kenny, thanks for the report brother! I have gotten a lot out of them and some of your advice has definitely helped me put more fish in the boat (kayak) especially the tip you gave a few weeks back on how yo fish the popping shad more patiently. My first 7+ pounder came on using a bone color popping frog, letting it rest for 30+ seconds to draw up the bigger fish.
