grouper season

The sharks were kind enough to leave us the head!

We were able to get out a couple days this past week. When I say “get out” I mean truly run offshore.

The wind has been a bear but we were able to get out for the start of grouper season which kicked off May 1st. Let’s just say the grouper were home and ready to play! So were their good friends the AJ’s. The hard part wasn’t hooking up, it was getting them to the boat. The sandbar sharks have been ridiculous — we ended up with more grouper heads than actual grouper! Chicken rigging was productive as well with really good catches of triggerfish, beeliners and lane snapper.

The kingfish bite started to heat up again towards the end of the week. Live bait seemed to work best. Unfortunately, live bait has been hit or miss. One day it’s easy to find and the next it’s not. Obviously, if you can catch live bait, catch live bait!

The nearshore shark fishing has been nothing short of stellar. We have experienced catches of tigers, bulls, lemons, blacktips, etc. You name it and we’ve probably caught it in the last month. We’ve also caught bull redfish and some snook on our nearshore shark charters this past week so book a trip and let’s go fishing.
