bass fishing

One freshwater and the other saltwater outing for last week. On Monday, I drove down to Garcia to take a look around. The northeast corner was open this time around and I made my way to the north flats only to find dirty water conditions. Our Florida bass don’t like it when the waters are dirty. Along with the water still registering in the low to mid 80’s was another hindrance for what I was looking for. The waters are still being pumped into the Stick Marsh and 3 Forks impoundments from the rain we had earlier in the week. I decided to make my way into the central part of the lake where the hydrilla is still somewhat thicker but because of the vegetation the water is cleaner also. With the slick calm conditions, I decided to pull out my fly rod and give it a go. It wasn’t long before I got my first bass on a surface fly. After a few more fish it was getting hotter and later in the day so I headed back to the ramp.

The next day I spent it on the Lagoon. To my surprise the water was registering in the mid 70’s. Still the air temperatures were hot and muggy by noon. I took advantage of the higher water conditions and fished some waters that normally I can’t float my boat in. It turned out to be the best decision for the day as I found some decent trout willing to eat and a few under slot snook as well. These spots were heavy with mangroves so I chose a small soft plastic Gambler EZ Swimmer rigged with a screw-in 1/8 oz. hook to fish it weedless along the edges of the mangrove shoreline. All in all, two good days on the water.

This week will give us rainy and windy days for our weather so I’m sure the waters on the freshwater side will be pumping and moving in areas. A good thing is that the water temperatures will dip into better conditions for the winter bite.
