It’s been a long 2 1/2 months of knee pain that kept me from doing pretty much nothing. It’s been just over a week after surgery to the meniscus tears on my left knee and I have been pain free since. I was finally able to pull my boat down to Garcia last week and take a look around.
The north end is open to navigating but some areas were best at an idle speed. There is still a lot of topped out hydrilla around the shallower areas of the lake that should soon start to die off once our cold fronts come through to open up better areas I believe to be the best for spawning activity. We fished the northern flats which were 4-5 foot deep with submerged grass.
We started out throwing topwater plugs to no avail so we then changed up to subsurface type baits. It took several changes of lure choices to finally find something the bass wanted to chew on. One was a smaller 3/8 oz. Rattling Vibe and the other was a 1/8 oz. Chatter bait, skirtless and a TZ Gambler EZ Swimmer for the body. We caught a little over 10 fish drifting over the grass flats.
All in all, it was a great day with no pain and a bent rod. Water temperatures were still hitting 80 degrees but since we had our first taste of colder nights, cooler water temperatures will be the norm. Another front will pay us a visit next week and once we have a 68-72 water temperature the bass will start making their way to the spawning areas. I’m looking forward to this season!
