Fall fishing is fantastic. The variety of species coupled with the abundance of baitfish has us in the guiding community loving life right now. This week alone using different types of bait like croaker, pogie, mullet, shrimp, and pilchard my clients have racked up an impressive number of fish species. Speckled trout, tarpon, bull shark, snook, whiting, sheepshead, redfish, tripletail, flounder, ladyfish, bluefish, mangrove snapper, jack, black drum and one big mantis shrimp have all been landed. This variety of species is hard to find at other times of the year. But as other places are celebrating the cooler temperatures of Fall, we here on the Space Coast are celebrating “still summer.” Still summer is like “regular summer” only it’s about 5 degrees cooler. As a fishing guide ANY relief from the African desert heat we experience in our regular summer from June through August is welcomed.

Here are some tips to keep your rod bent as we transition through still summer.
1) Continue to fish early and late in the day
2) Start your morning with an artificial lure and when your bite slows switch to a live bait of some kind
3) Start shallow and work deeper as the day progresses, or conversely, go from deeper to shallow spots as the sun is setting
4) Coat yourself in bug spray if you try to fish lighted docks at night
5) Bring plenty of hydrating drinks no matter when you fish. Heat exhaustion is no joke and can happen to you even after the sun goes down

Let’s all hope you get a chance to fish this month because these are the days that memories are made on. If you need help finding fish, please feel free to book a trip with me (an easy google search will put you on my website’s reservation page) and we will get out there and catch your next memory!
