The lake is still way over regulation and pretty safe to run everywhere. The main canal was clogged as of 3pm today. Take your time around these blockages, most of the time you can’t see if someone is coming down the canal and there could be a terrible accident. Those fish aren’t going anywhere so you don’t have to race to your spots.
Top baits this week for me were the Zman Jackhammers, John Laurenza Jr. spinnerbaits, Boogerman Buzzbaits and the Mike Bucca 7” Trick Shad.
I’m fishing the half ounce green pumpkin, Bret’s Bluegill Jackhammers in areas with scattered hydrilla. I use a 4.5” Hogfarmer Spunk Shad in green pumpkin magic or Blizzard gizzard. Fishing these on flats with scattered hydrilla or along ditches with hydrilla edges. These fronts are making the bite tough on artificial. I would suspect the with the water temps creeping up the bite will get better.
I caught a few fish on a white Boogerman Buzzbait with a Bass Assassin Die Dapper trailer. No trailer hooks. A little trick I do, when reeling in the bait, don’t stare at it. Your catch rate will go up when you feel the fish instead of going off the sight of the blowup.
The Mike Bucca Bull Trick Shad in Bone color is my go to bait for swimbaits this week. Get on the Bullshad email mailing list so you can get the bait drop info. The only way to get the Trick Shad and Glides are to go to a bait show that Bullshad attends or through the bait drops. Sign up at Bullshad.com
I’m fishing John Laurenza Jr. spinnerbaits slowly in ditches and canals. The half ounce size has been the best for me and I use a paddle tail 4” die dapper by Bass Assassin for my trailer. Gold and shiner were my best colors.
The live bait bite is on fire. Grass edges near deep water is the key. Hyacinth packed in canals is another really good area to check out. Shiners are getting hard to catch because they are spawning as well.
Tight lines!
“Your catch rate will go up when you feel the fish instead of going off the sight of the blowup” – as someone who considers himself to be a guru of getting excited on the hookset and pulling it right out of the fish’s mouth, I wholeheartedly agree!
