That’s right, you are not mistaken, Capt. Crush is featured not once, but twice in this week’s forecast. I wanted to touch on some observations of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in its own post — Hands Up, Don’t Cast — and then have this space here mostly dedicated to sticking it to my friend, the lone, solitary hold-out in the “mullet run denier” club — revered Spacefish contributor, Capt. Glyn Austin.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you go fishing.

I’ve been calling the mullet run for several weeks now. I’ve told Glyn, I’ve shown him — I’ve been relentlessly working the beaches, day in and day out, putting in the time, but he just won’t hear it. To be fair, it’s hard to see if the bait are running when you’re Donald Ducking around the Carribean on a Disney Cruise. At first it was a fun little exercise giving Glyn a hard time for his stubborn beliefs, but at this point, I’m concerned he may be a legitimate bait tard. I’ll find out today for sure because I’m actually going fishing with him, observing him in his natural habitat. It should be a fun experiment!

Surf Fishing

Now let’s talk about the fishing situation in the surf! The mullet are THICKKKK out there. I actually believe we are seeing PEAK mullet run activity in Melbourne Beach right now (Monday late afternoon). Bait pods are exploding in the water like its the 4th of July, for as far as the eye can see. Mullet are everywhere, it’s soooo on. Get after it, now is the time.

As for other surf-related fishing endeavors, I am still catching pompano out there and continue to fill the freezer. Wow. Meanwhile, the sandflea situation has been barren outside of a few key windows. I’ve been relying mostly on blanched fleas, especially since I ran my mouth so much about FishGum, it’s now always sold out at Saltwater Cowboy. Damnit.

Surf fishing is as good as it gets right now. If you want to charter a trip for the family, you couldn’t ask for a better day at the beach than with the CrushStation — it’s an affordable, crushing good time — book on my website or drop my a DM. LET’S GO. Don’t forget to keep an eye out on the beach for law enforcement trying to bust balls. Wayne Ivey may very well be watching you from the bushes, just saying. Good luck and be safe out there!
