I spent another week on the Lagoon again. For me it’s the best bite going for the time spent on the water for bites. This heat has slowed the bass bite way down unless you fish with live shiners.
Monday started the week on a sour note as the batteries in my remote for the trolling motor decided to die on me on the first deployment into the water. Our first spot was compromised as you need the trolling motor to silently work alongside the mangroves. We then went to my open water area and made several drifts with the wind current. The waters were very dirty on this day. I think with all the west, southwesterly winds have continuously pulled dirty tonic waters from the Sebastian River and pushed it to the north.
Wednesday started off fantastic from the first cast. I was happy to have my grandson with me again. His casting skills keep us away from the mangroves so my open water area works well for him to learn. This day right from the get go we had several large schools of jacks working these waters. The water was slick-calm and there were large areas of glass minnows present. We decided to get a couple of dozen shrimp again and caught several mangrove snapper before the dolphins moved in on us. We powered up the Mercury and moved about a mile away until they went on their happy way elsewhere. At that moment we moved close to where we were but got sidetracked by sighting one of the big schools of jacks so we set up in front of where they were heading and sat and waited to make a cast. My grandson made his cast when they moved closer and within no time his drag was screaming. This fish had him into the backing very quickly. I knew it was going to be his biggest fish to fight of the day. I cranked up the trolling motor to get the line back on the reel. After giving chase for a while we finally got the fish in the net. It weighed 14 pounds! A quick picture and we sent it on his way. A few high fives and hugs and he was ready for home.
The next day was an exact repeat as the day before except the big Bull Sharks moved in on us and we’re attacking the fish we were catching. The one shark that actually breached the water to attack the fish caught I estimated to be 10 foot. It’s been a very fun and memorable time on the water.
