Abacos Islands Billfishing

This week’s edition of “Beyond Brevard & Back” takes us over the Abacos Islands, Bahamas. Every year about this time the Bahamas gets invaded by dozens and dozens of American billfishing teams, including Port Canaveral rigs, looking to catch billfish in a series of tournaments. While for years and years the main marlin tournament series was the Bahamas Billfish Championship, now there is a 3 tournament series called the “Abaco Diamond Series” run by Captain Skip Smith.

At the end of last week, Captain Ryan Schiedel and Cory Schiedel marlin fished off Green Turtle Cay in hopes of raising a few marlin. The Schiedel family have been fishing out of Port Canaveral since as long as I can remember. Their father, Barry Shiedel, had a Ocean Yacht, Good Vibrations, in Cape Marina for a long time and all three of the sons, Ryan, Cory and Kyle learned the ropes of fishing on this boat and the boat was known as one of the top Yellowfin Tuna producing charter boats out of the Port. Ryan and Cory were fishing off Green Turtle on on Rob Nunziata’s boat “Out-A-Line” a 61′ Viking out of New Smyrna. The crew only fished for about 2 hours and during that time they raised and caught two blue marlins. The first blue one was seen messing with a long rigger and Cory dumped it back to him and Rob fought the fish until boat side where it was released. The second fish came in hot on their teaser and rolled hard on a flat line which their buddy Matt Green was at and he proceeded to get the hook to stick and get it to boat side as well.

The marlin fishing is heating up and with all the normal Port Canaveral teams over in the Bahamas like Wave Paver, Bear Trap and Plane Simple we’re sure to have some more billfish reports soon. Till next time!
