I was only out on the water one day last week. A short trip on 3 Forks before the rains moved in. They are still moving water into the St. John’s as some of the areas we went to were very dirty and a foul odor was present as well. I managed a trifecta catch of a couple of frisky bluegill, one crappie and two small bass all eating my beetle spin. We were watching a large rain system off to our east as we fished the area and managed to run from the first part but the second half of it just got larger with much more rain to it so we called it a day.
Some would think the day wasn’t worth such little time on the water but the experience is much more than just fishing to me. Where Malabar road goes from pavement to dirt I always slow down and observe the small pasture area’s north and south as I creep along. Some days you see nothing but older footprints in the dirt road from previous crossings from the feral pigs that cross its path and then some mornings you see turkeys or deer. This day I was graced with a doe come trotting out from the bushes to my right. It stopped in the middle of the road in front of me to take a look at me. It slowly turned away trotting down the middle of the road before exiting to my left into the hidden pasture behind the tree line. How cool that was for a non hunter like myself to enjoy.
This coming week will give us Floridians its first Arctic Blast of some 30 degree temperatures. This will change our tactics to catch fish. It will also put our bass most likely in a lockjaw mode as the water temperatures will drop quickly. If we’re graced with a week of warming temperatures they will be hungry after they acclimate to the changing environment. Slowing down your presentation of the lure you throw should keep your rod bent.
Merry Christmas to all and see you next year- or maybe earlier. Easy Days.
