I spent three days on Garcia last week. I really enjoy fishing this lake due to the vast vegetation of Bullrush, Lilly Pads and Hydrilla but through the years it isn’t the gem that it once used to be. I remember that once you figured the lake out you knew exactly where you were at any given time but recently it has changed so much that sometimes, I have to stop and think just where I am. Floating islands have moved around to now be stationary islands and some areas that were wide open to run around are now completely blocked off. When I first was brought to this lake to fish it I was totally lost to the surroundings. It took 5 years before I ventured out alone to fish. I really do miss “The Good Ole Days” of yesteryear.
Monday was a solo trip and I was looking for Bluegill beds. I first stopped in an area that at one time had lots of Bluegill beds from times ago. The water was quite stirred up and trying to see the bottom in only 2-3 feet of water was impossible. I moved around some but still found bad water to fish. I moved farther to the north side of the lake and this area had very clean water with submerged hydrilla mixed in. I managed one small brim throwing a Stealth Bomber fly pattern and a small bass too. This was all I had in almost 3 hours. I put up the fly rod and grabbed my trusty little suspending Jerkbait and started to catch a few more bass in the 2-3 pound size.
Tuesday I came back to the same area I left off on Monday with a close friend and managed to catch over 20 bass but no real size to them. It was a fun rod bending day though. Thursday was round 3 and we struggled to get bit. All the fish we did catch were very small. I did catch my first Mayan Cichlid which that was surprising to me. All in all a great week of fishing.
