Winter shrimping ended with full pulls in Volusia and North Brevard County. The hot weather and aggressive mosquitoes is enough reason to hang the nets up, however, reports are coming in for S. Brevard from trappers on Eau Gallie Causeway and Mather’s Bridge. These have been the popular hot spots to catch large brown pink and white shrimp. So far, in June we saw strong yields from land trappers as well as dippers off Mather’s Bridge. It has been early-season erratic, but when it’s on, it’s yielding 400+ from trappers. Those frequenting Titusville Pier at the Max Brewer Bridge have not conceded the end of the season and still make the journey of hope on the planks.

Central Florida shrimping season is in its last month of decent sizes and productivity. May normally marks the end of the winter season. However, we did get off to a six week late start. This season continues to gift us with jumbo size white shrimp (blue and green tail). Yes, we have seen them get mixed into our winter run for decades on a small level. This year, the big giants brought Brevard and Volusia Counties thrills, chills, captures and misses. Interesting as it may be, they did not come through last season in any great quantity. But, in the 2017 season, we had millions come through every night of the entire season. So, it is of great surprise to see these white crickets pass through our light fields in 2019 because they they send us no love in 2018.

Breaking News – FULL PULLS since July! South Daytona’s five year white shrimp slump has come to an end. Prior to the hurricanes of 2016 and 2017, we were already in a slump. The results were either no shrimp or popcorn size shrimp in small quantities.

We are in the miserable hot part of the summer, but we have so many things to enjoy, even when the shrimping is slow. For instance, scalloping is going off in Steinhatchee and Crystal River. Limits were reported opening week. Folks were bringing as many people along for the trip to increase the boat limits (10 gallons per boat, or 2 gallons per person).

The shrimping season in south Brevard is shaping up to have epic potential. The hot spots right now are the bridges in Melbourne and trapping is on fire at the SR 192 bridge.
