pompano

Can you feel it in the air? It’s coming! So, what does a cold front mean for surf fishing?

Generally the rule of thumb is that the first REAL cold front of the fall season is what begins to push the migrating pompano, whiting, and pelagics such as mackerel into the surf. Pompano prefer colder water between the 65-72 degree range, do your research on water temps and find a nice spot on the beach with clean sandy-green or aqua blue water. The rigs that are working in my area currently are the Pompano Catchers(Surfari edition) in all white floats and orange fluorescent floats baited with FishGum Pomp Candy or Golden Ghost Crab. These products can be purchased at any time through pompanorich.net.

Key advice: Tip your artificial baits with a small piece of peeled shrimp, a clam foot, or crab knuckle if you can find them. Ideally if you are able to find live or blanched sand fleas you are in the money given you’ve done your part to select a “good spot” for fishing. I went out yesterday after work and though I missed the tide by a few hours the action was non stop with a plethora of smaller fish.

shark

If you’re up for the challenge and you are prepared with the equipment and permits from FWC. This fall season will be the perfect time to target your first shark from the beach. We quickly turned one of the bait fish we caught into this healthy shark that gave my friend Matt a good run(walk) for his money. The fight lasted over 15 minutes!

Tight lines and good fishing.
