snook

Captain Justin and I have had the snook fired up on some days. The bite is happening on some of the near-coastal areas outside of Port Canaveral. Live pogies are still the number one bait to use for these slot and over-slot fish that are ranging in size from about 27 to 37-inches.

We’ve been finding redfish mixed in with the snook in some areas too. Soft plastic Saltwater Assassin sea shad tails rigged on a 1/2 ounce jig head seem to catch the redfish better than the larger pogies.

King mackerel, tarpon, and sharks are other species we are encountering on our near coastal outings.

In the lagoon the trout bite is good in areas with lots of mullet. Deeper edges seem to be preferred by the trout rather than large flats right now. Tripletail are another species that seem to have popped up out of nowhere this week. I’ve caught a half dozen to 20 inches while looking for tarpon in the deeper sections of the northern Indian River Lagoon on some of my recent outings.

Overall the bite remains fairly good for us, and we are happy to get our anglers out for a fun time on the water, then back to the dock before the afternoon storms roll in.
