South Florida, here! Super stoked to have a welcome arrival of pomps in the Hutchinson Island region. Northern fronts and the ground seas from offshore tropical depressions have surprisingly brought our resident fish to our beaches. A plus, plus for the ultra light jigging community — pomps, lady fish and jacks have found a home at the Stuart and Jensen relief bridges.

The Indian River has recouped some magical sea grass in the areas proximal to these bridges. 3/16 ths and ½ ounce jigs pink/white and orange/white are the ticket. It’s not a pro secret, but to increase your success, use a 20 lb. fluorocarbon with a quill. Tie a 6″ loop knot with the jig and quill sliding freely on the leader. The quill replicates the glass minnows and usually 90% of the fish will eat the quill. The jig is a sand puffer creating the disturbance. Jig the shadow lines for the greatest success.

Due to numerous replenishment projects, we have not seen fishable sand fleas. They definitely exist, as we’ve seen the proof from recent mutton catches off Juno Beach and Stuart — their stomachs have been loaded with sand flea fragments. Our surf fish are hitting freckled crab knuckles and pieces of live shrimp. Both Fish Bites and Fish Gum are working well in eliciting the strike. Long casters have some what dominated the action.

I am National Sales Manager for Fishgum. I have Pro Staff Ambassadors up and down the East Coast. Kevin Cooke and Scott Dixon are both beach fishing guides. Probably the two best young fellas that I’ve mentored. On recent trips, their best results were on Pomp Candy and Fleasicle. We sell out product by color. Each color has fleas, shrimp, clam and crab blended into a thick scented strip. The fabric is water soluble and a chemical releases the scent immediately. Fishgum is in Whites, DeBrooks, Billy Bones and Stuart Angler. I have it on my site, pompanorich.net.

Scott and Kevin have landed many permit and have landed beach pomps up to 18 inches. Data indicates this is the best October we have seen in our region in five years. These fellas are smart and won’t take you out unless the conditions are right. Kevin Cooke is “Last Minute Charters” (Call 772.380.3265). Scott Dixon Charters can be reached at 386.214.3818… The pictures tell it all!
