It’s almost that time! We’re approaching the opening of snook season, and right now the snook fishing couldn’t be better! From inshore around mangroves and docks throwing top water plugs and small hard baits, to inlets and passes with large live baits the snook bite is on. Snook are one species that are an absolute blast to catch. With their hard runs and acrobatic jumps, they truly are one of the best overall gamefish!
If you’re an inshore guy, the mangroves and docks typically are the best place to look for these fish. Skipping small artificial baits like the DOA paddle-tails in black and silver or silver mullet are my go to. It also doesn’t hurt to fish these areas early in the morning with a small Rapala Skitterwalk or a twitch bait such as the Mirrolure Mirrodine. The key when doing this style of fishing is look for an area that has some type of indifference (drop offs) shallow spots, shadow lines, anywhere they could be lying to ambush baits.
If inshore isn’t your style, the inlets and passes are good as well. Usually a little heavier setup such as a 6000 size reel with 50lb braided line to a 50lb leader and a large live bait like pigfish, pinfish, or large pogie are hard to beat. Check your tides and drift around any sort of structure and the snook should make an appearance.
