October is actually an extremely underrated month for deep sea fishing off the Space Coast. We tend to want to carry on the misery that is September for good reasons but in all reality some of the biggest catches of the year can happen in October.
Like September, October requires a full day commitment because a majority of the time we need to go further offshore to get into better fishing or time is needed to keep switching up locations and or styles to find what is working.
October is actually a really good month for mahi. Does that mean you will catch them every trip? Nope it doesn’t mean that at all but if the correct conditions occur on that given day the odds of success are high.
Normally bottom fishing is the saving grace. These fish like to feed before fronts, storms, swells etc. Couple different approaches to bottom fishing. Stay shallow and fish for mangroves & muttons or go deep for groupers and amberjack. The mangroves and muttons actually require more skill from the angler while the groupers and amberjack require more strength from the angler.
Nearshore fishing for sharks, red drum, snook and sheepshead is a great option because there are a lot of days that it is just too rough to go out deep.
Full Day or Nearshore but either way October might just surprise you.
