Almost to April is probably the best thing about March but that being said March does have the allure of possibly giving to us early all the great things we love about April.
We are already to the middle of March and I am once again bringing a late report. First part of March gave us calm seas and phenomenal king mackerel fishing along with some really great stringer fish fishing.
We now have a big swell and rough seas moving in this week so it’s about to get real difficult. However, right after this swell goes away it might just be the trigger we need to kick off a early mahi run. The dirty water will force the mahi to localize and make the search grid smaller as the clean water of the Gulf Stream forms a hard edge. This might just carry us into April and trick us into thinking we had a long mahi season if the mahi do actually decide to come over to this side of the stream.
We can also expect the swell it to do the same for our cobia. The dirty water should butt up to slightly cleaner water on the back side of the shoals after the swell dissipates. This will narrow the search grid. March many years ago was the cobia go to month but things have changed. The cobia seem to prefer the sharks over the manta rays and free swimming cobia or cobia mixed in with bait balls hasn’t happened in years.
Sword fishing has been very good with boats coming in with trophy’s more often than not. With any luck big swords coming to the dock will be a regular occurrence.
We look forward to a great Spring Break and we really look forward to getting to April.
