Chip caught this slot sized Mosquito Lagoon trout on a Z-Man Pop Shadz in the pearl white color.
Silver mullet in their fingerling stage poured out of the backwaters this week as water levels continued to fall.
With the decline of our local waters over the past several years it’s quite satisfying to see so many bait fish wandering about. In fact, I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen so many schools of silver mullet assembled over such an expansive area.
Even though the grass was very sparse throughout this area there were plenty of predators milling about and occasionally blasting the mullet on the surface. Spotted seatrout were by far the most active species on the feed, though some monster redfish were seen torpedoing their war through the thickest pods while a few ladyfish targeted the smallest mullet.
Top-water walking plugs proved the best option though Z-Man Pop Shads also received some attention before the sun brightened our days.
If the finger mullet stay out in the open waters they’ll continue to draw more and more predators into the central lagoon’s front-water areas. I’m hoping the jacks find them soon for some explosive action. Also looking forward to the tarpon showing up to wreak havoc on the most important food source of the summer season!
