I got to sneak out for about an hour and a half this morning after waiting out the rain. On the way paddling to some docks that I wanted to fish, there was a shore-to-shore full rainbow. I was tossing either a blue and white buck tail jig or a red and white topwater anytime I saw a mullet jumping. I caught a healthy sail cat on the jig and quietly slid in on the upstream of the docks I wanted to work, evenly dividing up my casts between a Big Gulp white curly tail with a splishot about 10 inches up the line. I caught another Sail Cat and an undersized trout on that rig. On my other poles, one with a chartreuse frog and the other with a natureal/tan soft plastic shrimp, I thoroughly worked in, under, and around the docks, pilings, and the mangrove trees in between landing another Kitty and an under slot trout for my efforts.
Father Time crept up so I paddled back to the truck, jumped into some street clothes and joined society for the afternoon.
Hey Jimmi, thanks for sharing! Anytime I get to sneak out I try to take advantage of it too.
Thanks for sharing, Jimmi! How long have you been fishing here? The funny thing about sailcats is some people never seem to get tired of the fight that the larger garbage kitties can put up, but others, like myself, curse the day these critters were created.
The rule is 3 cats in row, and it’s time to switch baits, rig up Bobber or fish elsewhere.
That being said, medium size 2-7 lbs sail cats are some of the best meat you can get, if you know how to clean and prepare them. The bigger one usually are full of parasites.
haha I hear they are tasty and I’m more than willing to try, but they sure as hell aren’t getting loaded into my cooler!
Damn cats.
