It’s flounder time on the Space Coast and the bite couldn’t be better! The last few weeks have made for some really great flounder fishing, from Sebastian to Ponce and everywhere in between, flounder have been showing in good numbers and some great size fish at that!
Flounder are one species that can be slightly difficult to target but with some patience they are a-ton of fun! The best method, in my opinion, is fishing a tandem rig. I prefer fishing two small artificial baits about a foot apart with a 1oz sinker below, similar to a chicken rig tipped with small baits such as mullet, mud minnows, or my favorite, Gulp’s swimming mullet. A large shrimp or small baitfish fished slow along the bottom on a 1/2 oz jig-head will produce some great results, as well.
Flounder like areas like jetties, offshore structures, channel drop offs, edges, and even docks. Drag a bait slowly along the bottom and be very patient after feeling the bite before setting the hook, many people like to work a bait too fast, or move the bait off the bottom too much. Slowing down will drastically improve your catch ratio!
The bite should remain hot for at least another week or so and there is plenty of good fish from 3 to 5 pounds and better right now!
